Highly active mixed-valent MnO<sub>x</sub>spheres constructed by nanocrystals as efficient catalysts for long-cycle Li–O<sub>2</sub>batteries

We demonstrate a low-cost and facile strategy to synthesize mixed-valent MnO<sub>x</sub>spheres constructed from nanocrystals (~5 nm), containing Mn<sup>II</sup>, Mn<sup>III</sup>, and Mn<sup>IV</sup>species. Such highly active mixed-valent MnO<sub>x</sub>spheres with high surface area greatly improve the performance of Li–O<sub>2</sub>batteries.
