The cyanophyte Oscillatoria brevis (Kütz.) Gom. has been investigated in field and laboratory. Axenic cultures of the clone NIVA CYA 7 produced strong muddy - smelling compounds, geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol. The correlation between profuse development of benthic cyanophytes and off-flavour problems indicates that these organisms are liable for the effect. The present study showed that Oscillatoria brevis was able to synthesize the off-flavour compounds concerned.
