ABSTRACT The fruit or fruit pulp of Emblica officinalis Gaertn. is a reputed drug of Ayurvedic, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathic systems of medicine. The drug (dried, fresh fruits and dried juice powder), is an excellent antipyretic, antioxidant, astringent, laxative, diuretic, aphrodisiac, antacid and haemostatic. Modern clinical studies have been conducted on this drug in support of claimed activities. The approved modern therapeutic application for Emblica is support based on its long history of use in well-established systems of medicine, viz., Ayurveda, Unani Siddha and Homoeopathy. The present paper deals with detailed pharmaco-botanical studies and review on related medicinal aspects of the drug.
