The high temperature oxidation behaviour of silicon–based structural ceramics and its effect on mechanical properties are reviewed. Known interrelations between fabrication, composition, microstructure and properties are presented. Thermomechanzcal properties of these non-oxide ceramics are strongly dependent on the nature and amount of residual intergranular glassy phases present as a consequenceof the use of densification additives (such as MgO, Y2O3 and Al2O3).
