A polymer lithium–oxygen battery based on lithiated perfluorinated sulfonic conducting ionomers swollen with non-aqueous solvents operates at room temperature, showing good cycling stability, rate capability and a capacity as high as 1500 mA h g<sub>carbon</sub><sup>−1</sup>.
