The activity of pyriproxyfen as an insect sterilant was studied. Total number of eggs/female and hatchability or total number of progeny of the housefly and the German cockroach decreased with the topical application of pyriproxyfen in a dose-dependent manner. The sexual transmission of sterility by pyriproxyfen-treated males was also observed, although the dosage required to cause sterility to his partner was relatively higher. Ten min exposure to pyriproxyfen formulated in rapeseed oil with dosages of 100μg/(cm)^2 on aluminium surface for the housefly or 60 min exposure to more than 400μg/(cm)^2 for the German cockroach enabled males to transfer sterility to females by sexual intercourse
