Summary The family of power transformations defined by Box and Cox (1964) is shown to lead to likelihood procedures which are scale invariant only if the design matrix allows for removal of an additive constant. Modifications of the transformation family are suggested which preserve both continuity in the transformation and scale invariance in the likelihood procedures.
