The application of several dyes, such as 4,4’-Bis-N,N-dimethylamino-benzophenone (1), dicyano-bis(1,10-phenanthrolin) iron II (2), and the Pyridium-phenolate betaine ET [30] (3) is demonstrated to estimate empirical donor-acceptor and polarity parameters of several inorganic solids, polymers and combination of both. The method employed is based, on a correlation analysis of the UV/VIS spectral data of the probe dyes in more than 70 protic and nonprotic solvents versus the acceptor numbers (AN) of Gutmann as well as to the multiparameter approach of Kamlet and Taft using the α, β and π* scales. The determination of the acceptor number AN and acidity g and dipolarity-polarizability π* for several compounds (inorganic oxides, cellulose derivatives) is discussed.
