The critical specific growth rate, m*, corresponding to a critical reactor substrate concentration, S, appears to have practical utility for plant operations and for grading various industrial wastes regarding their potential for causing operational problems. In the current work a test procedure has been modified and extended to substrates other than phenol. It is shown that the n* values determined in batch growth studies for 2,4-dinitrophenol and orthochlorophenol predicted the wash-out point for continuous flow reactors which were fed these substrates. It was also found that changes in the numerical values of ?* induced by changes in operation of the continuous flow reactors were reflected in the p0 5 values determined from the batch studies. J.
