Abstract

The composition of the hydrocarbons generated in a source rock is dependent on the nature of the organic matter, its condition of accumulation and the changes during the maturation processes. A source rock (shale, carbonate or coal) contains both kerogen and bitumen. The objectives of this study are to develop a genetic classification of kerogens correlating both microscopic and organic geochemical parameters at a low maturation level (up to 0.6% Ro) and to specify the morphologic and chemical changes of kerogens (i.e. reactive to inert) during natural and artificial maturation processes. For the study, 70 samples from different stratigraphic horizons with variable lithology, organic carbon content and maturation have been selected.
