Abstract

Today, paper mills use a wide variety of fillers - with different morphologies and chemical structures - whose physical properties influence the quality of the paper sheet. This paper explores how fillers affect paper quality, and the author concludes that parameters such as particle shape, density, size distribution, aggregate size and strength are as important as individual particle size. Once the particle structure is known it is possible to predict sheet properties following relatively simple rules.
