A procedure is described in detail which yields directly the complete spatial distribution and sizes of roots in soils, and so provides such information as the length and surface area of root per unit volume, the number of root tips per unit volume, and the proximity of roots to one another. The method involves stabilization of the soil by vacuum impregnation with Plastrene 47 and examination of the serial surfaces prepared by surface-grinding, using both visible and ultraviolet fluorescence photography.
