JPEG XT: A New Family of JPEG Backward-Compatible Standards

Abstract

The Joint Photographic Experts Group recently produced a new standard, JPEG eXTension. JPEG XT is both backward-compatible with legacy JPEG and offers the ability to encode images of higher precision and higher dynamic range, and in lossy or lossless modes. Here, the authors shed some light on the recent developments of the JPEG committee and discuss both the current status of JPEG XT and its future plans.
