Explanations in Gesture, Diagram, and Word

Abstract

Explanations are multimodal. This chapter looks at the semantic and pragmatic parallels and contrasts of the three modes in explaining routes or assembly. Deictic and iconic gestures and schematic and iconic diagrammatic elements indicate landmarks/objects and actions. All modes of explanations have a narrative structure: beginnings, middles, and ends.
