Abstract

In this work, the Fenton-like decolorization of an azo dye, Acid Red 1 (AR1) by Fe-ball clay (Fe-BC) catalyst was studied. The effects of different reaction parameters such as initial iron ions loading on ball clay (BC), catalyst dosage and initial concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and AR1, and solution pH on the decolorization of AR1 were assessed. The results indicated that by using 12 mM of H 2 O 2 and 5.0 g L - 1 of the 1.0 wt.% iron ions on BC at pH 2.5, 99% of decolorization efficiency was achieved within 180 min in a batch process. The results indicated that Fe-BC was a promising catalyst for the heterogeneous Fenton system.
