The oral administration of ethanolic extract of Z. sativa fruits at doses from 125 to 500 mg/kg protected gastric mucosa against the injuries caused by 80% ethanol, 0.6N HCl, 0.2N NaOH, and hypertonic saline in rats. The extract also prevented the injuries induced by nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (such as indomethacin and ASA), reserpine, hypothermic restraint stress and pylorous ligation in rats. Moreover, Z. sativa pretreatment inhibited significantly the effect of ethanol on gastric mucosa, such as depletion of stomach-wall mucus, reduction of the concentrations of proteins, nucleic acids, and nonprotein sulphydryl groups, besides necrosis, erosions, congestion, and hemorrhage.
