<h3>Dedication to Joseph Stokes III, MD</h3> Dr Joseph Stokes was a member of this panel until his untimely death in June 1989. It was his characteristically clear-sighted vision of the need for population strategies to lower blood cholesterol that led to the formation of the panel, and his contributions to the formulation and execution of the panel's work were extraordinary. Dr Stokes played a pivotal role in shaping the development of the National Cholesterol Education Program as a leading member of the program's Coordinating Committee. His insight, scholarship, and commitment to public health were vitally important in ensuring the early success of the National Cholesterol Education Program. Dr Stokes' leadership and effective advocacy on behalf of the National Cholesterol Education Program mirrored his dedication and monumental contributions to the prevention of cardiovascular disease in the United States.
