SUMMARY Examination with the electron microscope revealed that cells from rough colonies of Moraxella bovis had numerous pili on their surface and those from smooth colonies lacked pili. It appeared that colonial dissociation from rough to smooth was associated with loss of pili and probable loss of virulence. Serologically, the pili of isolate FLA-264 were identical to those of isolate IBH 68 (712L), but were not cross-reactive with specific antiserum produced by rough cultures of isolate FLAVET 1. This study indicates the importance of morphologic dissociation in studies on the pathogenic and immunologic aspects of M. bovis .
