Extracellular field inhomogeneities alone make very small contributions, whereas the orientation-dependent BMS intracellular resonance frequencies lead to the majority of transverse dephasing. Equilibrium exchange of water molecules between the intra- and extracellular compartments plays a significant role in transverse dephasing.
