The current form of treatment for alcohol and drug addiction called "abstinence based, AA treatment" enjoys an important historical and reciprocal relationship with the organization, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). AA is neither affiliated with nor endorses a type of treatment for alcoholism or drug addiction. However, treatment centers incorporate AA "philosophy" for the disease concept and "principles" for the treatment of alcoholism. Furthermore, a major focus of these treatment programs is to prepare the alcoholic for eventual participation in Alcoholics Anonymous after discharge.
