Comparative investigations of gonorrhoea, nongonococcal urethritis and control patients seen at the male venereal diseases clinic in Brisbane, using a variety of specimen collection methods and microbiological laboratory procedures, are described. The detected incidence of yeast-like fungi, mycoplasmas and bacteria is reported in terms of specimens, culture systems and patient groups. No clear associations between organisms and infection states were found. The possible role of ubiquitous commensal bacteria in non-gonococcal urethritis is discussed.
