The modifiable determinants of delayed calling for professional help by stroke patients were the fact that they did not recognise the symptoms as a stroke, and the circumstance that they waited until the symptoms would disappear or become worse. This latter circumstance, referral by the family physician by telephone and transportation by ambulance, were modifiable determinants of delayed hospital admission.
