Abstract

The histopathological picture of cerebellar malaria shows features of an encephalitis typified by progressive proliferation of glial cells and mesenchymal adventitional tissue in the absence of major parenchymal changes. However, necrosis by shock contributes an important part to vascular damages which cannot always be clearly distinguished from inflammatory changes. Both mechanisms result in severe disturbance of microcirculation. ‘Cerebral malaria’ is the expression of severe systemic involvement which could have been avoided by early adequate treatment and prophylaxis.
