Abstract

There has long been a need for an authoritative textbook presenting the clinical manifestations of congenital cardiac malformations. The recent spectacular advance in surgical treatment of cardiovascular anomalies has intensified that need. It has been admirably met in Dr. Taussig's present volume. The book is divided into four parts. The first section deals with the physiology of the malformed heart and discusses diagnostic principles. The second considers those malformations which deprive the body of an adequate amount of oxygenated blood. The third part is devoted to malformations which permit the body to receive an oxygen supply sufficient to meet the needs of the person. The last part is given over to treatment. A definite pattern is followed in the discussion of each malformation. The nature of the malformation is first explained, then the course of the circulation is outlined, both during fetal life and after the circulation to the lungs
