Bohane, T. D., Perrault, J. and Fowler, R. S. (1978). Aust. Paediatr. J ., 14, 191–192. Oesophagitis and oesophageal obstruction from quinidine tablets in association with left atrial enlargement: A case report. A 12‐year‐old girl with left atrial enlargement developed oesophagitis and oesophageal obstruction following administration of quinidine bisulphate tablets, a sustained‐release quinidine preparation. Substitution by powdered quinidine sulphate resulted in rapid disappearance of all oesophageal symptoms. Left atrial enlargement may result in delayed passage of potentially irritant tablets and lead to oesophagitis which further aggravates oesophageal obstruction.
