SUMMARY Torsion of the uterus occurred in 7 mares. In each mare, the torsion was located cranial to the cervix and was not associated with torsion of the vagina. In 2 mares, the uterus had ruptured, allowing the fetus to escape into the abdominal cavity. Surgical correction of torsion was successful in 3 of the 5 mares that did not have uterine rupture. The direction of torsion was established in 6 of the mares and found to be clockwise in 5 of the 6.
