Abstract

(Abstracted from N Engl J Med 2016; DOI: 10.1056/NEJMoa1602412) Zika virus (ZIKV) was first identified in Brazil in 2015 by reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction assays of serum specimens from patients who presented with a dengue-like illness that was characterized by rash, fever, myalgias, arthralgias, and conjunctivitis. Zika virus has been linked to neonatal microcephaly.
