Abstract

Abstract Complete hematologic and erythrokinetic studies were performed on 19 uremic patients; the results obtained are in agreement with those of previous authors. In a select group of 6 stable uremic patients, studies were repeated after a single hemodialysis, and during continuous peritoneal dialysis in 1 additional patient. Transient improvement in ferrokinetics and the parameters of effective erythropoiesis were noted in all. Various explanations of the pathogenesis of azotemic anemia have been considered, A decrease in the production of erythropoietin is considered as one of the more plausible mechanisms for the production of this anemia.
