This booklet critically reviews the most widely used techniques for measuring urinary iodine in order to provide planners and laboratory workers a single source of assessment techniques. There are detailed instructions on how to execute each method and general comments on their use in iodine deficiency disorder control programs. Chapter 1 reviews iodine deficiency disorders and urinary iodine levels. Chapter 2 covers principles of urinary iodine methods. Chapter 3 provides an overview of available urinary iodine methods including important features of each method to consider when selecting the best method for any particular situation. Chapter 4 provides the details of 7 methods including: method source reference brief description features equipment reagents solutions procedure calculation of results notes and costs. All the methods except one have two steps a digestion or ashing and a colorimetric determination of iodine. Chapter 5 addresses special technical considerations: safety an iodine-free work place minimum laboratory needs urinary collection and storage of urine samples computers for data handling and conversion of SI units. The last chapters list the literature references; resources for methods laboratory supply houses and other information on iodine deficiency disorder; and the names of board members members of the executive committee regional coordinators and senior advisors of the International Council for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders.
