The responses were composed of different combinations of a relaxation phase and a contraction phase. A few strips exhibited contractions only and a few strips relaxation only. The individual strip retained the behavior throughout the experiment. No systematic difference in the responses was found in strips from the different regions. The configuration of the response was slightly shifted in favor of contraction by beta-adrenergic blockade with propanolol and prostaglandin synthesis inhibition with Ketoprofen. After alpha-adrenergic blockade with phentolamine and cholinergic blockade with atropine, the reverse effect was seen with augmentation of the relaxation and reduction of the contraction. The relaxation phase was completely abolished by nerve poisoning with tetrodotoxin, but was still observed with all other antagonists present, and was therefore nerve-mediated through non-cholinergic, non-adrenergic and non-prostaglandin transmitter or modulator systems. © 1983 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByJUNG S, FRASER M, OZAWA H, YOKOYAMA O, YOSHIYAMA M, DE GROAT W and CHANCELLOR M (2018) URETHRAL AFFERENT NERVE ACTIVITY AFFECTS THE MICTURITION REFLEX; IMPLICATION FOR THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STRESS INCONTINENCE AND DETRUSOR INSTABILITYJournal of Urology, VOL. 162, NO. 1, (204-212), Online publication date: 1-Jul-1999.Crowe R, Noble J, Robson T, Soediono P, Milroy E and Burnstock G (2018) An Increase of Neuropeptide Y But Not Nitric Oxide Synthase-Immunoreactive Nerves in the Bladder Neck from Male Patients with Bladder Neck DyssynergiaJournal of Urology, VOL. 154, NO. 3, (1231-1236), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1995.Edyvane K, Smet P, Jonavicius J and Marshall V (2018) Regional Differences in the Innervation of the Human Ureterovesical Junction by Tyrosine Hydroxylase-, Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide- and Neuropeptide Y-Like Immunoreactive NervesJournal of Urology, VOL. 154, NO. 1, (262-268), Online publication date: 1-Jul-1995.Bridgewater M, Macneil H and Brading A (2018) Regulation of Tone in Pig Urethral Smooth MuscleJournal of Urology, VOL. 150, NO. 1, (223-228), Online publication date: 1-Jul-1993.Andersson K, Pascual A, Persson K, Forman A and Tøttrup A (2018) Electrically-Induced, Nerve-Mediated Relaxation of Rabbit Urethra Involves Nitric OxideJournal of Urology, VOL. 147, NO. 1, (253-259), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1992.Crowe R and Burnstock G (2018) A Histochemical and Immunohistochemical Study of the Autonomic Innervation of the Lower Urinary Tract of the Female Pig.
