Abstract

Over the past decade it has been recognised that viral hepatitis is due to at least three different agents. Two of these--the viruses responsible for hepatitis A and hepatitis B--have been identified and characterised. A safe, effective subunit vaccine against hepatitis B is now available in Australia and should assist greatly in the control of this important disease.
