Evaluating its diagnostic programs leading to appendectomy and examining the results in terms, for example, of ratio of “hot” to “cold” appendices removed enables a hospital not only to identify possible weaknesses in its practices but also to construct a gauge it can use to measure its own performance against that of other institutions. A method applicable also to other procedures is outlined.
