A SERIES of studies has been in progress in this laboratory for several years on the metabolism of Fusarium lini Bolley, the causal organism of flax wilt. Tochinai [1921, 1, 2] first pointed out the omnivorous nature of the organism, as regards both carbohydrates and non-carbohydrates. He also noted the production of carbon dioxide in fermentation tubes. This suggested that ethyl alcohol might also be produced, and led to the work reported in the first papers in this series on F. lini [Anderson and Willaman, 1922; Anderson, 1924; Letcher and Willaman, 1926].
