The dispute over whether the disease should be viewed as a leukemia involves much more than semantics, since correct conceptualization may well be the prerequisite to more effective management of a now hopeless condition. More expeditious diagnosis could lead to treatment with agents used against other myeloproliferative syndromes, perhaps while these puzzling cells are still capable of responding.
