Abstract

In December 1972, the Bureau of Radiological Health of the Food and Drug Administration and the Pinellas County Health Department of Florida conducted a joint survey of ultrasonic therapy equipment in the St. Petersburg area. Selected facilities were visited, and information was obtained about both the use and performance of this equipment. The operational characteristics measured included frequency and modulation, ultrasonic power output, and timer accuracy. In addition, users were questioned about the desirability of various equipment features. The majority of the units tested appeared to be unable to deliver a prescribed amount of ultrasonic energy to the patient. These findings were obtained on equipment as found in the field, however, and do not necessarily reflect the conditions of units as manufactured and initially delivered. The results of this survey will be used by the Bureau of Radiological Health to determine the need for an ultrasonic therapy equipment performance standard.
