Abstract

This paper presents a reliability study of the flexural strength of steel beams, protected with lightweight insulation material and supporting a concrete slab, under fire conditions. The study has delineated the various components of variability, and numerical estimates of these components, based upon experimental data wherever possible, are given. For the combination of dead and arbitrary point- in-time load values, safety indices and corresponding values for probabilities of failure are given for the strength of the steel beams designed according to current codes and using conventional design practice to define the insulation thickness required. The safety index is found to vary both with the specified fire resistance rating and the opening factor. It is desirable that a more rational structural design methodology for fire is adopted.
