For most pharmacologically treated diabetic patients, freedom from death, myocardial infarction, and subsequent revascularization during long-term follow-up is superior with bypass surgery compared with angioplasty. This worse outcome was mediated in part by the frequent occurrence of incomplete revascularization with angioplasty.
