The British National Formulary is perhaps the best of its kind in the world, and important improvements come with every edition. It is compiled by a large Joint Formulary Committee under the auspices of the British Medical Association and the Pharmaceutical Society. Possibly because most sections of the medical and pharmaceutical professions are represented on the committee, there has been relatively little public discussion of the Formulary. We believe that such discussion could help to make the Formulary an even greater and better influence on prescribing habits. We shall therefore occasionally comment on various aspects of the BNF, particularly after the 1966 edition has appeared.
