An assessment of rigidity as well as expansion is necessary for proper interpretation of the study. Although the nocturnal penile tumescence categories of normal expansion-rigidity and insignificant expansion are relatively clear-cut, and indicate psychogenic and biogenic impotence, respectively, there still exists a number of patients who are not in either of these categories and in whom further delineation is necessary. © 1981 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited ByLevine L and Carroll R (2018) Nocturnal Penile Tumescence and Rigidity in Men without Complaints of Erectile Dysfunction Using a New Quantitative Analysis SoftwareJournal of Urology, VOL. 152, NO. 4, (1103-1107), Online publication date: 1-Oct-1994.Allen R, Smolev J, Engel R and Brendler C (2018) Comparison of Rigiscan and Formal Nocturnal Penile Tumescence Testing in the Evaluation of Erectile RigidityJournal of Urology, VOL. 149, NO. 5 Part 2, (1265-1268), Online publication date: 1-May-1993.Bain C and Guay A (2018) Reproducibility in Monitoring Nocturnal Penile Tumescence and RigidityJournal of Urology, VOL. 148, NO. 3 Part 1, (811-814), Online publication date: 1-Sep-1992.Ackerman M, D'Attilio J, Antoni M, Weinstein D, Rhamy R and Politano V (2018) The Predictive Significance of Patient-Reported Sexual Functioning in Rigiscan Sleep EvaluationsJournal of Urology, VOL. 146, NO. 6, (1559-1563), Online publication date: 1-Dec-1991.Allen R and Brendler C (2018) Snap-Gauge Compared to a Full Nocturnal Penile Tumescence Study for Evaluation of Patients with Erectile ImpotenceJournal of Urology, VOL. 143, NO. 1, (51-54), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1990.Ellis D, Doghramji K and Bagley D (2018) Snap-Gauge Band versus Penile Rigidity in Impotence AssessmentJournal of Urology, VOL. 140, NO. 1, (61-63), Online publication date: 1-Jul-1988.Lavoisier P, Proulx J, Courtois F, De Carufel F and Durand L (2018) Relationship Between Perineal Muscle Contractions, Penile Tumescence, and Penile Rigidity During Nocturnal ErectionsJournal of Urology, VOL. 139, NO. 1, (176-179), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1988.Lavoisier P, Proulx J and Courtois F (2018) Reflex Contractions of the Ischiocavernosus Muscles Following Electrical and Pressure StimulationsJournal of Urology, VOL. 139, NO. 2, (396-399), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1988.Wespes E, Delcour C, Rondeux C, Struyven J and Schulman C (2018) The Erectile Angle: Objective Criterion to Evaluate the Papaverine Test in ImpotenceJournal of Urology, VOL. 138, NO. 5, (1171-1173), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1987.Melman A, Kaplan D and Redfield J (2018) Evaluation of the First 70 Patients in the Center for Male Sexual Dysfunction of Beth Israel Medical CenterJournal of Urology, VOL. 131, NO. 1, (53-55), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1984.Saypol D, Peterson G, Howards S and Yazel J (2018) Impotence: Are the Newer Diagnostic Methods a Necessity?Journal of Urology, VOL. 130, NO. 2, (260-262), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1983.Barry J (2018) Editorial CommentJournal of Urology, VOL. 130, NO. 2, (262-262), Online publication date: 1-Aug-1983.Jacobs J, Fishkin R, Cohen S, Goldman A and Mulholland S (2018) A Multidisciplinary Approach to the Evaluation and Management of Male Sexual DysfunctionJournal of Urology, VOL. 129, NO. 1, (35-38), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1983.
