Induction of Sustained Hemopoiesis in Fatty Marrow

Abstract

Abstract Evacuation of the fatty marrow cavity results in a sequence of regeneration which is associated with a phase of hemopoiesis. Hemopoietic activity is, however, transient, being replaced by adipose tissue, so that 6 mo after evacuation the marrow is once again fatty. This phase of transient hemopoiesis can be sustained by phenylhydrazine-induced hemolytic stress. Hemolysis per se does not induce significant hemopoietic activity in nonevacuated totally fatty marrow.
