To improve the performance of the maximum power point tracking(MPPT) control of the wind energy generation system(WEGS) with direct-driven permanent magnet synchronous generators(PMSG),the principle of MPPT control of the WEGS using optical characteristic curve was explained according to wind turbine output characteristics. The advantage and disadvantage of speed and power control in MPPT were analyzed.A novel MPPT control scheme based optimal electromagnetic torque reference and a new method for detecting initial rotor position of the PMSG were proposed.A 10 kW experimental prototype of the WEGS with direct-driven PMSG and the wind turbine simulator controlled by TMS320F2812 DSP have been developed respectively for the experiments of the initial rotor position detection and system operation at steady and step change wind speeds.Experimental results prove the effectiveness of the proposed initial rotor position detection method and the MPPT control scheme.
