By using modern safety science and accident-causation theory, this paper firstly described the definition of hazard and the theory of systematic structure and two kinds of hazard, and then introduced the theory of the third kind of hazard. Based on the result of case study, the relation among these kinds of hazards and their respective accident-causation model was probed; three kinds of hazards in coalmines were discussed; causes for high accident frequency in coalmines were analyzed and countermeasures were pointed out. Conclusion shows that strengthening the research on basic hazard theory, particularly on the identification and control of the third kind of hazard, is very helpful to the improvement of safety management in coalmines.
