Parallel processing is a promising approach to on-line assessment of power system dynamic security and its real-time simulation. Many kinds of parallel algorithms have been put forward and implemented by various types of parallel computers. Because of its advantages such as high performance-to-price ratio, easy to update and good expansibility, more and more attention is being paid to personal computer (PC) cluster for parallel processing. Here several parallel algorithms for electromechanical transient stability calculation, including the network partition, parallel solution of linear equations, algorithms of Newton types and parallel-in-time algorithms, are summarized and assessed, especially the favorable and unfavorable conditions to implement these algorithms by PC cluster are concerned.
