The experiments were conducted to investigate the relationship between the visibility degradation and the particle pollution in Beijing since 1999. The results showed that the light scattering extinction by particles is the main mechanism educing the visual range.A strong relationship was idetified between the fine particle mass concentration and the visual range, but a little lower for the coarse particle. The fine particle mass concentration can be used to reflect the visual range approximately by using different regression equations in different seasons.
