Although anatomic radical retropubic prostatectomy has recently been challenged by advocates of laparoscopic and robotic techniques, open procedure is still considered the gold standard for surgical management of localized prostate cancer for the best outcomes in cancer control and quality of life. For more than 20 years, advances in the technique have rendered radical prostatectomy a well-tolerated and much less morbid operation. However, there are still some complications such as bleeding, rectal or ureteral injury.Postoperative complication is also well-known as stress urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. This paper provides a brief description of the procedure, recent technical advances and improvements in anatomical radical retropubic prostatectomy.
