A state-of-art review on the development of the Discrete Element Methods(DEM) for particulate materials was presented. The fundamentals and methodology as well as various models of particle interactions were briefly described, including the models used in practice for dry particles and progresses in modeling wet particles. Applications of DEM to various engineering areas and the up-to-date expansive investigation using the combination of DEM with other numerical methods were introduced. Finally some problems were pointed out and the trends of the DEM development were discussed.
