Abstract

Research on the growth kinetics of mixed microbial cultures has shown that a modified activated sludge proc ess having a mixed liquor volatile sus pended solids (MLVSS) concentra tion of 25,000 mg/1 could effectively treat wastes with biochemical oxygen demands (BOD) ranging up to 10,000 mg/1. A four-phase project has been undertaken at the Bio-Environmental Engineering Division at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to develop a con centrated activated sludge system ca pable of treating high-BOD wastes eco nomically. Phase one of this project, reported on by Stiefel and Washington (1), dealt with determining the oxygen and power requirements for maintain ing such cultures. The second phase, which is the subject of this paper, is an investigation of the problem of sep arating the suspended material from the mixed liquor (ML) and recycling the material back to the biological re actor. The third phase, which cur rently is under way, deals with an in vestigation of the growth kinetics of the suspended material and an op
