This paper discusses and formalises the use of the monomolecular function as an empirical model of the photosynthetic rate/PFD relationship. We shall treat this model, and the rectangular hyperbola in a three-parameter form which describes net photosynthesis and allows dark respiration and the light compensation point to be estimated
