The paper presents a new damage indicator D, valid for reinforced concrete sections under cyclic loading. D Q , based on sectionally absorbed energies, admits a physically meaningful assessment of damage and damage evolution under both monotonic and cyclic loading. The validity of D has been extensively proved by verification of own and published experiments. This damage indicator is incorporated in a finite ur-element, which describes the damage evolution between two stirrups in a detailed manner.
