ARTERIAL hypertension, usually designated as essential hypertension, is a highly complex disease syndrome. Its manifestations are many and varied, making a true evaluation of any form of therapy extremely difficult. This is further complicated by the normal progress of the disease, which encompasses the extremes from a fatal termination in a few months to a seemingly benign course of many years. Arterial hypertension is never actually benign, however, and the term should not be used. Sooner or later, damage to the brain, heart or kidneys will surely result.
